This volume covers the development of the EC and EU, the institutions and their functions, the relationship between EC law and national law, the law of the internal market, and competition law. It also examines the social dimension of the European Union.
Law of the European Union (formerly European Community Law) covers in a single volume the development of the EC and EU, the institutions and their functions, the relationship between EC law and national law, the law of the internal market (free movement of goods, persons, services and capital) and competition law. The book also examines the social dimension (the Social Chapter, equality of pay and treatment, environmental and other policies). The third edition responds to the significant changes made by the Treaty of Amsterdam, not least the renumbering of all the Treaty provisions. 'Third pillar' areas relating to criminal justice will be brought under the sphere of legal control. There will be an update to subsidiarity issues to take account of the Protocol on Subsidiarity and the Working Time Directive case. Substantial developments in state liability (Brasserie du Pecheur/Factortame, Hedley Lomas) have been recorded. Additionally, progress made on harmonisation of IP law, economic and monetary union, and the social chapter, is described.
