DNA profiling evidence is a forensic technique that has attracted considerable attention from scientists, lawyers and the media. It enables the scientist to compare two biological samples and to determine the likelihood that these samples originated from the same individual, and therefore has considerable potential as a forensic tool in criminal proceedings. But is DNA profiling evidence overwhelming or can a defence lawyer reasonably contest it in court? The research project detailed in this report evaluates the problems facing defence lawyers, both pre-trial and at trial, when they are dealing with this type of evidence.
