This work examines the differences between the monastic formation and education of men and women in Western Europe from the eighth to the 16th century. The use of music and physical training is addressed as well as attitudes towards education and actual educational theories.

This study investigates monastic education and formation in male and female houses in Western Europe from the eighth to the sixteenth century. The fourteen chapters, written by well-known scholars, consider monastic education and practices in the geographical areas of England, France, Germany and the Low Countries.
