This work enquires into the subject of heterosexual interpersonal violence. It takes as its starting point the contradiction between personal safety discourses and experiences of interpersonal violence.

Bringing together international research from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and Europe, this book presents a detailed examination of the violence perpetrated by males and females within the context of childhood, adolescence and adulthood. Based on illuminating empirical studies it accurately locates the societal implications of violence against males and females as well as the legal, social and public responses to violence. The book: details and applies new theories of gender and power to the study of heterosexual interpersonal violence; uses a broad range on cross-national research from the United States, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand; draws on empirical research on adolescent dating violence in the UK; and argues against socio-biological theories of violence.
