European Community Legislation has developed since 1967 a comprehensive system of laws and programmes to ensure that chemical products are manufactured, used and disposed of safely. This brochure describes some of the key legislation which makes up the EC chemical control system which covers three areas: new chemicals coming on to the Community single market; existing chemicals, some of which are dangerous and in need of strict control; and standards and voluntary programmes fostering good environmental management and environmentally friendlier products. Requirements introduced by Directive 92/32/EEC which came into force November 1993 are also included.
