The Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats, known as the Bern Convention, came into force in June 1982. Chief amongst the aims of the convention was the need to ensure that nature conservation requirements were taken into account in sectoral policies, particularly planning and development policies and the guarantee of minimum protection for most wild animals and plant species, with some special protection for a number of endangered species. The content and recommendations of the Convention are summarized in this booklet.
