A sequence of 32 graphic novels - like black and white paintings that form a continuing image of 43 feet. It amalgamates images inspired by a vast variety of examples from various periods and genres into a figurative-expressive composition of great power. It reflects the horror of the real world as it comes upon us day by day through the media.
M.S. Bastian, artist and creator of graphic novels, and Isabelle L., artist and graphic designer, have been working together since 2000. One of their collaborative works is "Bastokalypse", a monumental sequence of 32 graphic novels - like black and white paintings that form a continuing image of 43 feet. "Bastokalypse" is a word play derived from the term Apocalypse and M.S. Bastian's surname. The end of the world appears as an artistic motif in all cultures and periods, ancient and modern. The artists amalgamate images inspired by a vast variety of examples from various periods and genres into a figurative-expressive composition of great power. It reflects the horror of the real world as it comes upon us day by day through the media. Astonishing, even amusing scenes stand beside visions of terror. Scenes of creation and construction are followed by devastation and extinction, the underworld by paradise. This publication also includes all 32 completed canvases in a large-size concertina folder of object-like quality. An essay on the Apocalypse as an artistic motif and the reflection of apocalyptic experiences in the history of art and literature is printed on the verso.
