This book covers the history of the Australian continent from the arrival of the first humans about 1,000,000 years or so BC, up to the present. It also analyses the ecological and environmental impact of human beings on the continent. Frank Clarke is Professor in History at Macquarie University.
The processes that resulted in federation are studied, as is the slow development of Australia into a modern, hedonistic, and sophisticated multi-cultural nation. This book is different from other books on the market in that it offers an up-to-the-minute environmental and cultural explanation for the current state of the nations, and does not eschew the darker aspects of Australian history in favour of a sunny, upbeat story of endless profit and progress. It celebrates the achievements of modern Australia but does not disguise that there were heavy costs born by those less favoured by fortune.
