As Nazism grew in their home country the author and his family fled from the terrifying consequences of anti-Semitism, first to Belgium, then to Cuba. Here they built up a prosperous diamond industry but family relationships suffered terribly as a result and Herman left for England alone. Here he began to build up his own diamond business but also had a disastrous marriage which led to a divorce and 25 years of being denied a relationship with his children.
