The story also strongly underlines the imaginative marketing and new ideas that, for example, brought the Portuguese Open to Quinta da Lago in 1976 and helped to keep the championship on the European calendar at a very difficult time. A further series of seven Opens were to follow at Quinta do Lago as well as many other major tournaments such as the Algarve World Cup and the Taca Presidente da Republica. These events attracted worldwide Press and TV coverage, thereby promoting the region as a tourist destination and doing much to encourage investment.
