The 1990s so far have seen significant developments in materials technology in a variety of materials classes. This work presents and summarizes most recent results to the materials researcher, and provides an up-to-date knowledge of the current state of affairs.

The 1990s so far have seen significant developments in materials technology in a variety of materials classes, such as metals and alloys, ceramics and coatings, biomaterials, and surfaces and interfaces. A growing recognition by industry that materials technology is essential to process and product development in many sectors has stimulated new programmes of study at universities. The latter have in turn resulted in more trained personnel with experience in materials. This work presents and summarizes most recent results to the materials researcher, and provides an up-to-date knowledge of the current state of affairs.
