The blow-by-blow account of one of the most incredible limited-overs cricket matches ever played anywhere in the world. No fewer than seven world records were broken as Surrey's Alistair Brown scorched his way to 268, the highest individual score ever recorded in a first-class limited-overs match.

As the game began it was little more than a routine limited-overs cup tie during the English domestic season yet, some seven-and-a-half hours later, at the conclusion of a breathless encounter, those people lucky enough to be in attendance had witnessed a day of true cricketing history. An incredible five world records had been smashed while countless UK, competition, club and personal records had perished in a blaze of strokeplay, the like of which had never been seen before, even at a ground as renowned for stunning feats as the Oval. At the centre of much of the mayhem was Surrey's Alistair Brown, despatching the bowling to all parts as he annihilated the great Graeme Pollock's 27-year-old record for the highest individual score recorded in any limited-overs match at first-class level. When Brown's sensational innings came to an end he had taken the record from 222 to a mark that may never be beaten - 268.
