A collection of 17th- and 18th-century philosophical writings by such figures as Locke, Hume and Hobbes. Most of these texts have never been reprinted and should therefore supplement existing library holdings of 17th- and 18th-century British thought.

The 17th and 18th centuries produced a wealth of original philosophical thought in Britain. These two centuries are often associated with Hobbes, Locke and Hume, who laid the foundations of later philosophical discourse. This particular collection illustrates the wide range and variety of philosophical discussion which took place over these two centuries. Although influenced by the great figures above, these writers were also original and important in their own right. A key consideration in the selection of these eight titles was the scarcity of the original editions - most have never been reprinted and should therefore supplement existing library holdings of 17th and 18th century British Thought. The only title published more recently, Luce's definitive biography of Berkeley, was selected because of its exceptional importance for modern scholarship - here it is included with a new introduction by David Berman.
